I find that, for once, I have a few dollars in my PayPal account and wondered what an original piece such as this (or similar) would cost (with shipping up here to Frozen Canuckistan). Send me a note if you have time. Thanks!
No problem. It's so perfectly cool that I can't stop looking at it!
Hey, I know you're busy but I've been trying to determine if my inking speed is "normal" or just ridiculously slow. I'd love to know how long you figure inking this piece took you. This kinda somewhat similar piece (at least as far as subject matter) took me about 25 HOURS to ink (link below)! Is that crazy? I know I have to loosen up but I just wonder if, all things considered, that seems ridiculous or what.
I'm actually a slow inker. Sometimes I go quicker, it's so hard to say. The pro inkers are fast. I heard they gotta do 2 pages a day. They would say you're slow perhaps but I don't think you're that slow. I'm getting older so I'll try to just be concerned with the final product being the best it can. But I must confess, on this piece it felt like I took too much time. But then again, I am proud of the results. One time I drew, inked and colored 20 pages in 3 weeks. I wasn't happy with the results!
This is interesting to hear. Man, being a cartoonist really is like being sentenced to life in solitary! I can't remember who said that now but I can see what they mean. I'm determined to make myself loosen up a bit, if just for my own sanity. Of course, as you say, I still have to like the results. Sometimes things look BETTER if they are a bit looser though too.
I emailed this to Jack Davis and asked him about how long it took me. I think he is horrified by my slowness (although too polite to say so), especially since he would pencil AND ink about 4 pages in that time! Anyhow, he suggested I do a lot of quick drawing on cheap paper to get loosened up and, hey, he's Jack Davis, after all, so I'm going to do what he says!
Anyhow, thanks for this input. Btw I recently ordered the latest "Fearless Dawn" from Indy Planet (along with a bunch o' other stuff). Can't wait to get it!
Wally wood said that quote. Said he averaged $1 an hour his whole life. Yes I've found sometimes quick is good, my Helga Big Wow piece came out real fast and good like that. And oh yes, I've heard Jack Davis was fast as shit!
